Bridget Fleming Leads Race For Suffolk Legislator's 2nd District

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — The voters have spoken: Suffolk residents went out to the polls Tuesday to choose who will represent Suffolk County's 2nd Legislative District — and, with 27 of 68 districts still to be counted, incumbent Bridget Fleming was retaining her lead Tuesday night. Voters chose between incumbent Fleming (Democratic, Working Families), and challenger Robert Carpenter III (Republican, Conservative). As of just past midnight, Fleming had garnered 8,074 votes, or 55.03 percent, compared to Carpenter's 6,591, or 44.93 percent. Fleming, 61, of Noyac, spoke with Patch in advance of the vote. "These challenging times call for a steady hand on the wheel. I am committed to protecting and supporting our economy and our way of life without raising taxes," she said. She added: "I have delivered on transportation by garnering millions in additional state funding, initiating a pilot microtransit program to replace fixed route bus service that had been eliminated, and made other improvements. We initiated a coastal resiliency planning effort to protect taxpayer dollars and coastal assets, and prevent flooding. We have increased reserves and eliminated debt while investing in jobs and downtowns. And we continue to build the highly successful septic improvement program, investing more than $40 million to save our bays, creeks and harbors." Looking ahead, Fleming said: "I am committed to the well-being of our communities and would be honored to have the support to continue to work hard for you."
