NEW YORK CITY — Brad Lander, a prominent City Council member, landed one of New York City's most powerful elected positions. Lander, a progressive Democrat, will defeat Republican Daby Carreras, according to an NY1 projection. He carried roughly 70 percent of votes counted by 11:15 p.m. to Carrera's 23 percent. In his victory speech, he promised to fight to put federal funds into disadvantaged neighborhoods, divest the city from fossil fuels in the face of climate change and advance a genuinely inclusive multiracial democracy. Lander will replace current Comptroller Scott Stringer, himself a prominent progressive who mounted a failed bid to become the city's next mayor. Lander currently occupies a City Council seat that Mayor Bill de Blasio once held. But he's staked out positions that are often to the the mayor's political left. He's a close political ally with the city's Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who won re-election, according to an NY1 projection.
