Updated: 12 a.m. RESTON, VA — In the 36th District race for the House of Delegates seat, incumbent Democrat Kenneth Plum maintained a strong lead over Republican challenger Matthew J. Lang as votes were counted on Tuesday night. At midnight, Plum had 25,153 (71.44%) votes compared to Lang's 9,990 (28.37%) with 19 of 20 precincts reporting. Most of the attention Tuesday night was on the statewide races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. Fairfax County voters also had a chance Tuesday to show their support or opposition to the proposed $360 million public school bond. Precinct chief Elizabeth Shreffler said about 10 people were waiting in line when the Reston Community Center at Lake Anne polls opened at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. She estimated that by 3 p.m. about 50 percent of the precinct's active registered voters had already cast a ballot. "We've been steady all day," she said. "It's maybe higher than I would have expected, but we always really do well in this precinct." This the 16th election Shreffer has volunteered at the Lake Anne polls and her 10th as a precinct chief. She volunteers at the polls as a way to acknowledge the importance of the right to vote. "My foremothers fought and died literally for this right, and so it's very important for me to make sure that other people can enjoy and exercise that right," she said. As of midnight, the three statewide races and the 36th District House race had not been decided. Patch will update the results on Wednesday.
