Why is facial hair a factor in employment?

I have been having problems getting hired. My Mother keeps nagging on me to shave my face whenever I go there to visit. Facial hair if kept trimmed, IS NOT A HYGENE PROBLEM. Can anyone tell me why a man should be discriminated against for having facial hair. If this is indeed happening, what can be done to stop it. Is this something being PUSHED by women? If a woman were to have facial hair, I am sure that she would be allowed to keep it. Are men subjects to the demands of women? I used to paint cars. in order to have a tightly fitted respirator, you need to shave. I refuse to be exposed to hazardous environments. I therefore will NOT shave my face. Should I be refused employment for that? thanks, Bill.
