ELMHURST, IL — In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a stolen gun, a wallet theft, missing tips at a restaurant and harassing messages. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports: Stolen gun A resident in the 600 block of West Belden Avenue told police that someone entered her locked car parked in the driveway and stole a loaded handgun from the unlocked center console. The theft occurred between 12:30 a.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Wallet theft A customer at Whole Foods Market, 215 S. Route 83, told police her wallet containing credit cards and Illinois driver's license was stolen from her purse about 11:30 a.m. Saturday. A short time later, the victim was notified of several unauthorized charges on her credit cards. The suspect was described as a black woman, 30 years old, having long black hair and wearing all black clothing. Theft of tips A server at Buffalo Wild Wings, 149 N. York St., said someone left the restaurant during her shift with money from her two previous tables she had served. Police left a voice message with the suspect. Car burglary A car was burglarized Friday near Mack's Golden Pheasant Restaurant, 668 W. North Ave. Someone smashed the rear passenger window of the locked car and stole a briefcase containing a laptop computer, a computer bag containing an Apple iPad and a machine that helps with breathing. Harassing messages A person told police that a stranger texted 22 harassing messages about a family member owing money to the stranger. The problem was reported Sunday. An investigation is pending. Gun found A man said that while cleaning out his father's house in the 700 block of Cambridge, he found a handgun that he wished to turn in to the police for destruction. The gun was submitted about 8 p.m. Thursday. Order of protection A resident in the 100 block of North Michigan Street told police Friday that she had an order of protection against a suspect, but it expired. She was alarmed and disturbed when she found a note on her car from the suspect. She did not wish to pursue charges, but wanted the incident documented. Suspicious encounter Youths told police they were approached by a person who started talking about trains at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at York and Adelaide streets. The youths ran away and told an adult about the situation. It was learned the person was autistic, but highly functioning. He is interested in trains and safety. The person's parents said they would speak with him about how he approaches people, especially youths. Camera equipment found A person found a bag with camera equipment Friday in the 100 block of North York Street. An officer took possession of the camera bag, inventoried the contents and placed the items into evidence. Fugitive drivers Officers saw a car that was displaying a stolen license plate about 4 a.m. Sunday at Route 83 and Interstate 290. The vehicle sped away on eastbound Interstate 290 after an officer tried to stop him. An officer tried to stop a speeding, four-door Dodge Charger about 2 a.m. Thursday near Grand and Lake. The driver sped away, last seen traveling east on Interstate 290. The suspect was known to have been involved in several area ATM burglaries.
