need a carpentry repair

I have an outside stairwell with a support at the top thats rotted.. its 3 ft or so and a 4x8. Its bolted in and I'd like it replaced and a second board scabbed next to it for more support.. I'd also like a small piece of plywood put in with an adhesive and then the supports put under it.. Its easier to explain when you see it. I don't want the whole platform done as tearing into it may create way more work than I'd like to do at this time. I have a ten foot treated 4x8 and a treated 2x4. I need less than a half sheet of plywood if you have it. Or I may have something usable around here... Let me know if you can handle this repair. thanks
