Description

An Eagle on His Button explores the forgotten story of a group of local African-American farm boys who fought in the Civil War. The Lawrence County Historical Society, in partnership with Vincennes University's Humanities Film and Lecture Series, is proud to premier An Eagle on His Button. This half-hour documentary explores the forgotten story of a group of local African-American farm boys from Southern Illinois who fought in the Civil War. Told through the voice of Civil War Veteran, Oliver Russell, An Eagle on His Button details how these brave young members of the 28th US Colored Troops returned home triumphant in battle but unsung as heroes. This short, but informative, film sheds light on their story and their legacy. Larry Curry and John King, board members of the Lawrence County Historical Society and part of the team which produced the film, will be on hand for a Q&A following the screening. Join us as we celebrate the story and legacy of these Civil War Veterans. The screening and Q&A will be held at the Vincennes University Shake Library in room 112 on November 9, 2021, at 6:30 pm EST. This in-person event has a 50-person limit. Mask are required. For those who are unable to attend in person, a Zoom link for the introduction and Q&A portion of the event is available . Register for the link and for more information.
