We are following best practices for biosecurity from USDA and CDC. These are our standards. We're posting details so that there aren't surprises, and although it may seem like a lot of detail, just know that will help the day feel smooth and calm. There may be some exceptions to how we implement this plan because every rabbit is different, but this is what we are aiming for and ask you to help us keep every person and every bunny safe. We are in quarantine outbreak zone and it warrants attention to detail and safety by all of us. * QUARANTINE/SEPARATION: Just like at home, during the event we are keeping all rabbits and family items separate. Our plan keeps rabbit equipment, carriers, and supplies from potentially becoming contaminated with RHDV2 or other germs and spreading between rabbits. Plus keeping people in their own cars will help us protect from COVID and other germs too. * SHARING BEST PRACTICE LIST: You will receive another email with some ideas for how to make this day as safe and "fear free" as possible for your rabbit. Planning ahead will help keep you calm which will help the rabbit feel safe and calm too. * MASKS: All attendees including staff must wear masks regardless of COVID vaccination or testing status. * PROTECTIVE ACTIONS & EQUIPMENT: All staff will be following standard precautions and hand hygiene as well as wearing disposable gowns and gloves that are changed between every client. * SANITATION: Areas of potential contact are cleaned and sanitized. Follow the directions about where you may park/stand and where you are not to go. If you are coming from a farm or have mud/dirt on your tires, clean the tires and undercarriage before you come. * NO CONTACT: You rabbits will have no contact with any other rabbit or other animals. There is no indoor"waiting room" for rabbits or people. Stay inside your own vehicle and maintain the distance outside and inside as directed. The only contact will come from those directly involved in the chipping/vaccination process who follow hand hygiene protocols and are wearing protective coverings. * DRIVE THRU: Come 15 minutes early and stay in your own vehicle until your assigned check in time. Don't let your rabbits out in an exercise pen or get out to walk around. Vehicles in a cluster will moves forward through to a staging area. Please keep music volume down or off and follow the volunteer's directions including when to turn off the engine. * INSIDE LAYERS -- YOUR BEST PRACTICES: Put a trash bag or clean tarp down to cover your floor mat. Do the same for any seat where people will get out. Wear close toed shoes that cover the whole foot (not sandals or flipflops) so that your "dirty" shoes can be cleaned at home and your feet are not exposed. * TAKING RABBITS OUT OF CAR: Stop the engine. Open your own door, and go around to take one rabbit at a time out of its carrier and place it on the new clean drape that is over the cart pushed near your vehicle. If you need physical assistance, ask the staff. * WASH & DISINFECT YOUR CARRIER: Use a 10:1 water to bleach solution to disinfect the carrier. DO NOT add any BEDDING/STRAW inside with the rabbit. Use only a blanket if you put anything in the carrier. Pulling out the rabbit pulls out potentially contaminated straw etc. FRONT OPENING CARRIER: Open the carrier, remove the rabbit, and place it on the clean drape. (It's best is you have a blanket inside that can be pulled out with the bunny on top). Our staff will meet your rabbit and then stay together, never leaving a rabbit unattended. Like you, we are committed to keeping your rabbit safe. TOP OPENING CARRIER: In some cases it might be easier to bring the carrier and place it on the cart. Follow instructions from the volunteer. STAY ON YOUR SIDE: Our staff will push the cart a few feet away, just past the cones into the "clean area," staying attentive to your rabbit the whole time. (There are no unattended rabbits waiting in line on carts). Thank you for staying on the vehicle side of the cones and return to your car to wait. Let our staff push the cart or go get it, keeping the "clean area" clean from shoes. The rabbits will be just feet away from you. CHALLENGING PERSONALITIES / LARGER SIZES: We have several options for rabbits that don't fit the procedures above. Our rabbit savvy staff will be eager to help provide the most calm transition to the vet area. * VISUAL WELL CHECK: After the staff perform a brief visual well-check on the vehicle side of the cones, a volunteer will push the cart into the "clean zone" just feet away where the pre-loaded microchip syringe and vaccine syringe are stored and the vet staff are waiting. NOTE! WELL-CHECK: Rabbits must be healthy to help ensure they can mount a good immunity-building response to the vaccine which is necessary for effectiveness. During a basic visual exam, the veterinarian must decline to vaccinate any rabbits who are overtly unhealthy (i.e. emaciated, active nasal discharge, skin wounds or infections). If your rabbit is actively in the care of a vet, have your vet email us at [email protected] allowing decisions to be made in advance. Just like COVID protocols that keep humans safe, PLEASE HELP KEEP EVERY BUNNY SAFE-- KEEP UNHEALTHY RABBITS & PEOPLE HOME. MICROCHIPPING: After waving an electronic wand to detect a microchip, any rabbit without a microchip will receive a microchip without any additional costs. It's part of package cost whether or not you need one. This is a required identification step unless it has a unique identifiable tattoo; if you do not want a microchip, then this is not the clinic option for you. The 10-15 second process involves using a preloaded syringe to push a rice-sized capsule with a barcode under the skin between the shoulder blades. The sticker number from the microchip will be attached to the proof-of-vaccination card you receive at the return event. *VACCINATION: Using a pre-loaded syringe from the sanitary area, the veterinarians will administer a .5 ml dose of the MEDGENE vaccine in a one-time use syringe/needle combo which is disposed of in the sharps container. The staff will record information on our sheet for your records and ours. * TRANSITION: The staff will push the rabbit back to the vehicle side of the cone and the rabbits are in carriers back in your car. If you have more than one rabbit, you will start unloading the next rabbit onto another cart and stay with the rabbit until the other rabbit is pushed back on its cart to you. *EXIT: When all the cars are ready to leave the vet area, you will follow each other to the wait area as directed. * WAIT AREA: While you wait for 15 minutes, monitor your rabbit's health. Although unlikely to occur, if a rabbit seems to be having any concerning reactions, notify the vet assigned to this area. After 15 minutes you will get the go-ahead to leave the event. * WHILE YOU WAIT: Take off your shoes and put your socks/shoes into a bag for disinfecting / double washing at home with the rest of your clothes. Lift up the bag/tarp floor coverings and dispose of it in the trashcan brought around by volunteers. Wipe off the steering wheel and any other places you touched including the door handle. * HAND HYGIENE: Use hand sanitizer and wait for it to completely dry. Take clean socks/shoes out of a bag from home and put them on. Drive home. If possible, drive straight home. * AT HOME SAFETY: Wash your hands / sanitize before you touch anything at your house including door knobs. We recommend you change into a set of clothes you left at the door or brought with you. Don't wear shoes inside until sanitized. Leave the carrier outside and carry the rabbit to its area. Then go back to sanitize the carrier, your shoes and double wash your clothes and dry them. Consider washing your car, especially the tires. Shower. All of these steps together from your side and ours will help make this as safe as possible. Remember that we are in an active quarantine area of 125 miles from Ramsey County and doing the very best we can to stop any potential spread while we take the prevention/vaccination step. TOGETHER WE CAN PREVENT THE PREVENTABLE and HELP PROTECT MINNESOTA RABBITS. More details will follow in another email. Questions? [email protected] REFUNDS/CANCELLATIONS: We are purchasing vaccines and supplies and bringing in vet staff based on the number of tickets ordered. We're already too close to the event to cancel without wasting resources. We would honor transferring your time slot to someone else if notified at least 24 hours in advance. RESCHEDULE DATE: If we have a winter weather warning, we will postpone the event one week. Save that on your calendar just in case: December 17.
