To the Editor: Local elections are always important but the race for Naugatuck Board of Education is likely the most consequential item on this year's ballot. The direction our schools take in the next two years will have a lasting impact on the educational opportunities offered to our children and our local economy. We need people who will make decisions in the best interest of the students and our town which is why I enthusiastically support Cara Martini Munro for Naugatuck Board of Education. Cara is the only candidate for the Board of Education who currently works in the classroom. A Teach for America alum, Cara has spent two decades teaching in public schools in high need districts around the country. Currently, Cara is the 2020-21 Teacher of the Year at Hopeville Elementary School in Waterbury where she teaches kindergarten. Cara's experience in the classroom is important because she understands what supports are needed to help students achieve academic and social success. As a parent of a future Naugatuck public schools student, I want to know that the people responsible for prioritizing how resources are spent have practical knowledge of what is actually needed in the classroom. As an educator myself, I know how easy it can be to get caught up in negativity and to become jaded to the many setbacks we face in public education. It only took ten minutes of talking to Cara to not only convince me to vote for her, but to motivate me in my own professional practice. She is not content with complaining about the problems public education faces, she is willing to meet them head on as a teacher, a parent, and as a member of the Naugatuck Board of Education. Please join me in supporting Cara Martini Munro, one of the most passionate and dedicated educators I've ever met for Board of Education on November 2nd. Stephen SamelaNaugatuck
