MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A Montgomery County Police lieutenant was killed in a crash early Monday morning in Howard County. Daniel John Friz, 50, was traveling west on I-70 in the area of Maryland Route 94 when he collided with a 2018 Freightliner just after midnight. Police say Friz was pronounced dead at the scene. The Freightliner was inspected and there are no defects, but it is an ongoing investigation, police said. Friz had been a Montgomery County Police officer since 2003. He was most recently the deputy director of the Training and Education Division at the Public Safety Training Academy. Before joining the Montgomery County Police Department he served in the Gaithersburg City Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. "The men and women of the department thank the community for their continued thoughts and prayers for the family of Lieutenant Daniel Friz," Montgomery County Police said.
