WINCHESTER, CA — A car fire spread to some hay bales adjacent to a road in Winchester Monday, but the flames were quickly contained. The non-injury blaze was reported at 10:53 a.m. on Briggs Road, just south of Leon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said that a car with flames under the engine block pulled onto the shoulder, igniting several round bales. Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters reached the location within 15 minutes and stopped the flames from extending into the adjacent field. The blaze was knocked down by 11:30 a.m. CHP officers shut down the northbound side of Briggs for public safety, enforcing traffic control in southbound lanes to move vehicles in both directions.
