CONCORD, NH — The state of New Hampshire now has the lowest health care benchmark premiums in all of New England and are also lower than the national average. State officials made the announcement on Monday on the first day of open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act. Gov. Chris Sununu said he hoped the low rates would help "spur individuals to check back into the marketplace to select a policy that works best for them." Other positive trends for state customers include individual market rates that have dropped by 35 percent, benchmark plan premiums dropping by 7 percent, and premiums down 18 percent since 2019, when the state received a federal reinsurance waiver. Three companies offer ACA-compliant individual plans: Anthem, Ambetter from NH Healthy Families, and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Insurance Commissioner Christopher Nicolopoulos said the department was working to "maintain our commitment to fostering a more affordable, stable and accessible health insurance marketplace for all New Hampshire consumers." D.J. Bettencourt, the deputy insurance commissioner, said more than 5,500 non-subsidized New Hampshire residents enrolled in plans last year due to the affordability of coverage and the success of the waiver plan. "The NHID encourages anyone who needs health insurance to investigate the marketplace because most plans have never been more affordable," he said. "If you are considering an individual plan, you should talk with a licensed insurance agent to thoroughly research all coverage options so that you can determine the best plan for your needs. However, it is important to remember that you will still be eligible to enroll outside of the Special Enrollment Period if you have a life event such as loss of other health coverage, a marriage, the birth of a child, or a change in employment status." There are less than 23,000 uninsured residents who are eligible for tax credits under the new law. About 1,000 uninsured residents are eligible for $0 silver benchmark plans. Breast Cancer Locator Named Product Of The Year The NH Tech Alliance has named a new tool in the fight against breast cancer as its tech product for 2021. CairnSurgical's Breast Cancer Locator, a tool that provides surgeons with the ability to use a 3D-printed custom surgical device and an MRI-delivered visual model of the tumor to determine its shape, size, and location. This enables the surgeon to be as precise and successful as possible when removing a tumor. This, they hope, will lead to reductions in repeated surgeries. The locator will be on display at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport next year.
