INDIO, CA — A motorist died after suffering an apparent medical emergency and driving off Interstate 10 Saturday in the Chiriaco Summit area near Indio.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on the westbound side of the freeway west of Hayfield Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer D. Torres, who responded to the scene.
A witness who called the CHP reported the driver appeared to lose control slipped from view inside the car as it veered off the right sided of the road, about 600 feet into the desert and stopped, Torres said.
Paramedics who arrived at the scene reported that a medical emergency caused the crash, he said.
They pronounced him dead at the scene.
The exact nature of the medical emergency will be determined by the coroner, he said.
