Police Target Illegal Street Racing In SoCal

CULVER CITY, CA — Culver City Police Department partnered with officers from Gardena, Hawthorne and Torrance this weekend to crack down on illegal street racing in neighborhoods. Officers cited approximately 40 vehicles and confiscated more than 10 street racing vehicles, according to the Culver City Police Department. Several local police departments are working together with the California Highway Patrol's Street Racing Task Force to cut down on the street races. Street racing surged during the pandemic, and now authorities are fighting back against sideshows and street takeovers, The Los Angeles Times reports. The Los Angeles Police Department reports that street racing and takeovers increased by 27% as of July 2021. "Street racing and 'intersection takeovers' are extremely dangerous not only to the participants and onlookers, but to the community and residents surrounding the event," police said. "We are proud to partner with our neighboring agencies and help make our communities safer," police said.
