He did it!
Dakim Griffin broke a 44-year-old record. My record for most touchdowns by a Half Hollow Hills East High School running back.
Congratulations go out to Dakim. Records are made to be broken and this fine young man is a force on the gridiron. I accumulated 27 touchdowns in three varsity seasons at Hills East from 1974 through 1976. Dakim scored 29 in just one season!
In a conference game against Newfield High School of Selden this past Friday night (October 29), Dakim’s four touchdowns helped Hills East win (44-14) its sixth game of the season. Dakim scored his first touchdown early in the game to inch closer to the record. Then, a leg injury pulled him from the field and everyone was concerned that the injury might be serious and prevent him from capturing the record.
But, Dakim soon returned. He added another rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter for a 21-7 Thunderbirds lead. At 10:54 of the third quarter, he broke the record and increased the gap with Newfield to 27-7. Dakim scored one more touchdown later in the game and rushed for 275 yards.
Dakim is playing a game at a level beyond what I played. He's the best high school running back I've ever seen. I wish him the best should he decide to play in college and, of course, on whatever studies and career he chooses to explore.
