2 Deadly Shootings Friday: Birmingham's 99th And 100th Homicides

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating two homicides from Friday night, one in the Norwood community and another in Ensley. The deadly shootings, which are Birmingham's 99th and 100th homocides of 2021, occurred roughly 12 hours apart. The first shooting occurred in the 2700 block of 17th Avenue North just before 11 a.m. Friday. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said officers arrived on the scene to find a man in the driver's seat of a car dead from gunshot wounds. "The preliminary investigation suggests that an argument took place between the victim and a separate male prior to shots being fired," Fitzgerald said. "While on the scene, officers took a suspect into custody for questioning. That individual was transported to the Birmingham Police Headquarters for questioning by our homicide detectives." Just before 10:30 p.m. Friday, West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 4200 block of Avenue L in Ensley on report of a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple rounds were fired. "Officers were patrolling an alleyway when they observed a male lying unresponsive in a driveway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound," Fitzgerald said. "Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased." Details are still limited at this point in the investigation, and no suspects are in custody.
