Singing the Jazz Standards with Jay Clayton November 7th, 2021, 1pm - 3pm Online AND In-Person Jazz Night School www.jazznightschool.org In this workshop, internationally acclaimed vocalist Jay Clayton will cover the basics of jazz singing: vocal warm-up exercises; establishing personal keys; counting off tempos; exploring “jazz feels”; understanding form, clarity, and honesty of lyrics; stock arrangements; and beginning improvisation. Following a lesson on everything you need to sing the jazz standards, some will have the opportunity to perform a standard and receive feedback from Jay! This workshop is being offered as a hybrid, both online and in-person simultaneously, with a limited number of in-person participants. About Jay Clayton A vocal innovator and one of the pioneering teachers of improvised vocal music, Jay Clayton served as the director of the vocal department at Cornish College of the Arts for 20 years, was on the jazz faculty at Peabody Institute in Baltimore for eight years, and on the jazz faculty at Princeton University for two years. Her book, Sing Your Story: A Practical Guide for Learning and Teaching the Art of Jazz Singing, was published by Advance Music in 2001. Clayton is an internationally acclaimed vocalist, composer, and educator, whose work boldly spans the terrain between jazz and new music. Jay has gained worldwide attention as both performer and teacher. With more than 40 recordings to her credit, Clayton has appeared alongside such formidable artists as Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Reich, Kirk Nurock, Julian Priester, Jerry Granelli, Jane Ira Bloom, Gary Bartz, Jack Wilkins, George Cables, Fred Hersch, Gary Thomas, tap dancer Brenda Bufalino as well as fellow vocalists Jeanne Lee, Norma Winstone, Urszula Dudziak, and Bobby McFerrin.
