Description
The Palestine Exception: A Panel Discussion Please join the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) and the Associated Students Richard Oakes Multicultural Center (ROMC) in celebration of the 14th Edward Said Mural Celebration! The Edward Said Mural was made in honor of the Palestinian intellectual and luminary, Dr. Edward Said. Edward Said who has contributed greatly to the study of Orientalism, and has paved the way for us to discuss our very theme for the 14th Edward Said Mural Celebration. The Edward Said Mural is not just a celebration of Edward Said but a celebration of Palestinian knowledge, history, and culture. The creation of the mural did not come without organizing efforts, sacrifices, and resistance. The Edward Said Mural is the very example of what our theme for this year’s mural celebration is about, the exception of Palestine and Palestinian identity, and the erasure and silencing of what it means to be Palestinian. We chose the theme, “The Palestine Exception” for this year’s theme because of the past uprisings of May, and our very own divestment campaign in 2020. Joining us in a panel discussion will be Palestinian organizers from GUPS SFSU, Bears for Palestine at UC Berkeley, and from the Palestinian Youth Movement - Bay Area Chapter. Speakers who have first seen the exception of Palestine within academia and progressive spaces on their own college campuses, and with grassroots organizing in the Bay and across the country. Join us for a night of lively discussion with amazing speakers, live music, dabka, and performances! This will be our first Edward Said Mural Celebration since the COVID-19 lockdowns. As a precaution and for the safety of our community, we have taken a few steps to make sure that the space is as safe to our community and ourselves as possible. We ask that you RSVP using the QR Code or the link below as limited seating is available.
