WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Last week, Western Springs saw the most new weekly coronavirus cases since May, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, the village had experienced 1,582 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, with 33 new cases in the last week. The week before last, the village saw 18 new cases. For four weeks in June and July, the village's coronavirus case count did not budge. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at six. The latest deaths were reported May 31, May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 53 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. The figure compares to 95 in Darien, 104 in La Grange Park, 108 in Hinsdale and DuPage County, 110 in Elmhurst, 116 in Clarendon Hills, 118 in suburban Cook County, 119 in Burr Ridge and 137 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,695,524, a 0.9 percent increase from the previous week, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 25,771. Nationally, 45.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, a 1.2 percent increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 743,410 people have died from the virus in the United States.
