Seaweed is highly nutritious and prized as an ingredient in many cultures and may become a delicacy that cows will have in their feed. After receiving two USDA grants, researchers at The University of New Hampshire will study if adding seaweed to the diet of dairy cows can help reduce methane emissions. Alix Contosta, a researcher on the project, said that cows produce methane as a part of their natural digestion process and mostly emit methane "through their burps." Agriculture accounts for about 10% of all of the harmful greenhouse gases in the United States, according to the EPA. The U.N. Environment Programme added that reducing methane emissions "is an effective way to slow climate change."
