PORT JEFFERSON, NY — Two kayakers in distress were pulled to safety From Port Jefferson Harbor Thursday night.
Suffolk police said Marine Bureau officers responded to a report that kayakers were in distress in Port Jefferson Harbor just after 7 p.m. on Oct. 28. Marine Delta responded with the Port Jefferson Fire Department and, with the help of the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Ferry company, found a man and woman sitting on the western jetty at the entrance of the harbor, police said.
The pair were pulled to safety by the Port Jefferson Fire Department, and they were evaluated, but declined any "further medical attention," according to police.
Bob Huttemeyer was on the ferry at the time of the rescue and said he and his wife saw two people and a yellow single-person kayak in the water by the jetty before the two rescue teams arrived.
"The ferry waited in the channel by the jetty for about 30 minutes while the two people were rescued," he added.
