Description

GILROY, CA — The Gilroy Police Department was awarded a $90,000 grant toward a program intended to deter dangerous driving behaviors, the department announced. The grant, provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, will pay for additional enforcement measures, including DUI checkpoints, bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operations and community education presentations on traffic safety issues like distracted driving. "Impairment, speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors jeopardize the safety of other people on the road," said Gilroy Police Seargent Mike McMahon. "This funding allows us to provide necessary traffic enforcement measures with the goal of reducing serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads." The grant program runs through Sept. 22, according to a news release.
