Dr. Martin Luther King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King, III, give remarks at the commemoration of Dr. King's 1961 Seattle visit. The Northwest African American Museum and community partners are deeply honored to host Dr. Martin Luther King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King, III, during the final commemorative event of the 60th Anniversary of Dr. King’s historic visit to Seattle. Hear his keynote address at the University of Washington, the same campus at which Dr. King spoke 60 years ago. Space for this special historic event is limited and tickets are required. ABOUT THE COMMEMORATION On November 8, 1961, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968), the great civil rights leader, came to Seattle for his only visit. He was invited by the Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney, then a young pastor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Seattle's Central District, who had been a classmate of Dr. King's at Morehouse College and an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brother. This November 6 - 8, join NAAM and community partners in commemorating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1961 visit. This special community celebration will feature engaging and educational activities for youth and families that honor Dr. King's commitment to service, leadership, and legacy. ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING, III "My father’s views were unequivocal, and I have found them to be invaluable to me as guidelines for prayerful consideration of current events and issues." Martin Luther King, III is an American human rights advocate and the oldest son of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King. He is a community activist with a special interest in programs that support young people. Dedicated to expanding his father’s ideals, he served as the fourth president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from 1997-2003, leading marches, convening police brutality hearings, and organizing programs. He graduated from Morehouse College with a BA in political science. COVID SAFETY We care about your safety!
