Here are the top stories today in Burlington: A routine check-in is underway at Superfund sites in Burlington and Winooski where toxic waste cleanups were completed some years ago, the federal Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday. The five-year check-in is required by the federal government to make sure the cleanups worked. The EPA plans to examine the 38-acre Pine Street Canal site, often called Barge Canal, in Burlington, and the 1-acre Commerce Street Plume in Williston, to ensure that past cleanup efforts "continue to be protective of human health and the environment." (vtdigger.org) A person who was riding a bicycle on Dorset Street Thursday evening was transported to UVM Medical Center after being hit by a passing vehicle. The incident occurred shortly before 7 pm Thursday, and police shut down traffic near Frederick Tuttle Middle School as the incident was investigated. The bike could be seen on the side of the street, along with a shoe and several other items. (Local 22/44 News)The City of Burlington names its newest park in honor of the Kieslich family.
