TOMS RIVER, NJ — Road closures are happening in downtown Toms River on Friday evening as flooding has returned ahead of the second storm to hit the area this week.
Roads had not completely cleared on Friday morning from the flooding that happened on Thursday. Irons Street, which had been closed, was reduced to one lane along the center of the road because of water remaining along both shoulders.
By 5:45 p.m., Irons Street was underwater as was Water Street, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office said in an alert.
The Toms River Office of Emergency Management issued an alert just before 6 p.m. that said New Jersey State Police were closing Exit 81 in both directions on the Garden State Parkway because of the flooding.
"Plan an alternate route," the alert said.
"Flooding on top of already flooded roadways expected during back bay high tide, which is 7 p.m. tonight," an alert from the office of emergency management said. "Use extreme caution. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Be safe."
On Thursday evening, Route 35 north and south was flooded on the barrier island, and flooding was happening again on Friday.
Significant flooding was in the forecast, which was calling for water 1 to 2 feet higher than it had been on Thursday; it comes as the area marks the ninth anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, which inundated the barrier island and backbay areas.
