By Editor, Times of San Diego October 28, 2021 Public health officials Thursday reported nearly 5,000 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and 113 additional deaths. The 4,949 new cases throughout California brought the state's totals to 4.64 million cases. The death toll rose to 71,408. The U.S. has recorded 45.8 million COVID cases and 743,358 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. San Diego County had not reported new local data as of 7 p.m. Thursday. The county's last numbers, announced Wednesday, were 549 new cases, along with nine deaths. That data brought the total number of local coronavirus cases to 369,361 since the pandemic began. The death toll stood at 4,207. Meanwhile, as attention shifts to COVID vaccine boosters, about 15.4 million people have received an extra dose of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
