Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Saturday October 30th, 2021! First, today's weather: Periods of sun. High: 69 Low: 53. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: The Caldor Fire was massive and created (literally) tons of debris. Now it's time to dispose of that debris and Sacramento is here to help at our Kiefer Landfill facility. Sacramento County Waste Management & Recycling Director, Doug Sloan, said, "With the significant amount of debris caused by this massive wildfire, the department and its staff is ready to support El Dorado County with our disposal facilities. During this time, the public may notice an increase in traffic at Kiefer, but ultimately, these wildfire cleanup measures reduce risk to our region and protect the environment." (Saccounty.net)The Sacramento Fire Department is launching a new virtual reality tool to recruit future firefighters. Capt. Lawrence Whang came up with and designed the program after unsuccessful attempts to fully describe his firefighting experiences to his own children. "A lot of the videos that you see of fires are always from the outside looking in, but now we can put people right in the middle of it," Whang said. Sounds so cool! Want to check it out? The department plans to set up the virtual reality experience at outreach events starting with the Sacramento Kings game on Nov. 5. (FOX40)Traditional decor, altars and the recreation of a Mexican cemetery fill the grounds of the Latino Center of Art and Culture in Sacramento ahead of DÃa de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. "This whole site will be covered with offerings, altars, that families will come to make to honor their departed loved ones," said Marie Acosta, executive director of the center. It's believed that on this day, the souls of the departed loved ones leave the world of the dead and reunite with their loved ones for a single evening. Organizers are hopeful that people from other cultures can also learn about this tradition. It sounds amazing! (KCRA3)A grand jury has indicted Juan Manriquez, 20, of Antioch, and Andrew Tuma, 19, of Sacramento. They were charged with unlawful manufacturing and dealing in firearms, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. Tuma is 19 years old and cannot legally purchase a gun in the state of California. Instead, he ordered kits from the internet and manufactured his own firearms and then sold the guns. If convicted, Tuma and Manriquez face a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. (Sierra Sun Times) The city of Sacramento is considering a ballot measure that would increase stormwater fees for residents to help fund repairs and improvements to the deteriorating system. There has not been a stormwater fee increase since 1996, and the city estimates that without one, the storm drainage fund to pay for maintenance and repairs of the stormwater system will be insolvent by fiscal year 2026. The proposed fee hike would cost roughly $70 more a year for most homeowners from about $130 annually to $200, according to Department of Utilities Spokesperson Carlos Eliason.
