CONCORD, NH — Officials from across New Hampshire have issued statements of praise and mourning, and prayers for the family of a state trooper who was killed on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth on Thursday. Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill, the assistant troop commander for Troop A, was killed after a tractor-trailer truck crashed into his police cruiser not far from Exit 3, while he was working a construction detail. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Sherrill was described by Col. Nathan Noyes as a "trooper's trooper," a professional, and family man, who served more than 20 years with the force. Officials are requesting privacy for the family during this difficult time. Gov. Chris Sununu ordered the flags in the state to half-staff until sunset on Oct. 31. "The entire state of New Hampshire mourns the loss of Staff Sergeant Jesse Sherrill of the New Hampshire State Police today," he said. "Like all of our first responders, Staff Sergeant Sherrill was steadfastly devoted to the safety and wellbeing of his fellow Granite Staters. That he died while in the line of service is a terrible tragedy." John Formella, the state's attorney general, called Sherill an "incredible member of the law enforcement community and, more importantly, a loving husband, father, son and brother," while adding the tragic event was "a reminder that our men and women in law enforcement put their lives on the line every time they go to work. He added, "Today of all days, I urge every Granite Stater to take a moment to reflect upon and appreciate the service and sacrifice that these men and women, and their families, provide to their communities and our State every day." Senate President Chuck Morse (R-Salem) said officials there went "its deepest condolences and heartfelt support to the family of Staff Sgt. Jesse Sherrill as well as our state police" and commended him and others for putting their lives on the line, every day. He requested that everyone pray for the family. House Speaker Sherman Packard (R-Londonderry) agreed that the tragic crash was "a stark reminder" of the "hard work and sacrifice that our men and women in uniform endure to protect our communities." He also offered prayers for the family. U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) said she and her husband, Tom, extended "gratitude and sympathy" to Sherrill's family and friends. "New Hampshire has lost a true hero in the line of duty," she said. Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy (D-Manchester) added, "Our hearts go out to Staff Sgt. Sherrill's family, loved ones, and Troop A on the tragic news of his passing. Together, may we all honor his memory and his service to the state of New Hampshire." $68M In Sports Bets New Hampshire sports bettors waged a lot of money in September ... $68.1 million to be exact, according to officials. The bets led to a year-over-year increase of more than 75 percent. The New Hampshire Lottery and DraftKings, the state's sports betting provider, also set individual monthly bests in September for both mobile sports betting at $50.4 million and retail sports betting at $17.6 million, the lottery said on Thursday. Professional and college football bets accounted for about half of the wagers while baseball was around 30 percent. COVID-19 Vaccinations For The Homebound The state is resuming its homebound vaccination program for coronavirus and COVID-19, according to officials. On-Site Medical Services of Newport will be conducting the program. Anyone interested in an appointment to get vaccinated at home can call 603-338-9292, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
