In celebration of Mississippi writer Elizabeth Spencer’s one hundredth birthday, the University of Mississippi Department of Music is staging a November 2021 production of The Light in the Piazza, a musical based on Spencer’s novella of the same name. Featuring: Blake McIver Ewing (stage director)Amanda Johnston (music director) Emma Johnson (Clara) Isaiah Traylor (Fabrizio) Zoe Bofill (Franca) Blake McIver Ewing's vast experience in the entertainment industry is derived from multiple disciplines. His creative accomplishments range from film and television to live theatre and the recording studio. Performing on network television at age six, Blake was always just as interested in what went on behind the camera as in front of it. His starring roles on hit series such as “Full House” and “Hey Arnold” led to feature films including “The Little Rascals” and gave him the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg and Penelope Spheeris. Appearing in the World Premiere of the hit musical, “Ragtime”, Blake’s love of musical theatre was ignited. Tony Award winning director, Frank Galati instilled in him a structure for mounting a production that Blake continues to use today. While managing his own theatre company, YMTA, Blake directed a production of Elton John and Tim Rice’s “AIDA” at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and produced the critically acclaimed LA regional premiere production of “The Light in the Piazza” at the El Portal Theatre. Blake is also a graduate of UCLA.Canadian collaborative pianist Amanda Johnston is Professor of Music at the University of Mississippi where she acts as Music Director/Vocal Coach for the Opera Theatre; teaches courses in advanced diction; and coaches students at the undergraduate and graduate level. She is author of English and German Diction for Singers: A Comparative Approach, 2nd edition (Rowman & Littlefield, 2016), highly praised in the Journal of Singing for “enlivening the study of diction.” Her recordings include Pleas to Famous Fairies with Linda Lister, soprano (Albany Records 2018); Métissage with Adam Estes, saxophone (MSR Classics 2017); and Mahler: Rückert-Lieder with Julia Morgan, mezzo soprano (MSR Classics 2012). Amanda Johnston has been broadcast on CBC Radio 2, Classical 96.3 FM, CKWR, and NPR and has performed in Hong Kong, Canada, the United States, Germany, France, Austria, and Scotland.
