MEDFORD, MA — The Medford Police Department this week announced the passing of recently retired police officer William "Billy" Butts.
Butts died Oct. 21 at the age of 59, according to his obituary.
He was hailed by the department for his work with police families and youth groups in Medford, for which he received the Community Service Award in 2009.
"Officer Butts was affectionately referred to as 'The Mayor' by many in the community," Medford police said in a statement.
Butts served as a Medford police officer for more than 30 years before retiring in January.
"He will be remembered for his contagious smile, his wildly entertaining stories, comedic relief and his willingness to help at any time to any neighbor in need," his obituary states.
A funeral will be held Saturday, Oct. 30 at 9 a.m. at the Barile Family Funeral Home, 482 Main Street, Stoneham, followed by a 10 a.m. mass at St. Patrick Church, 71 Central Street, Stoneham. Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 2-8 p.m.
