BROOKFIELD, WI— An attorney for a Greendale man accused of shooting his former business partner in the head is asking for more time to work with an expert regarding an insanity plea.
In May, Lauren Toll, 79, pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, according to online court records.
Christopher Lee Hartley, an attorney for Lauren Toll, asked for more time with an expert regarding the plea during court proceedings on Monday, court records said. The request was granted and the competency evaluation was sealed by the Waukesha County Circuit Court, court records said. A review hearing is scheduled for Dec. 20.
Toll was charged in November 2020 with one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and dangerous use of a weapon. Toll's cash bail was set at $350,000, court records said.
If convicted, Toll faces up to 60 years in prison.
Police were dispatched to Charter Capital Management, 13805 W. Burleigh Road, on Nov. 18, 2020 for a shooting. The victim said he believed Toll shot him in the head due to resentful feelings over the sale price of a business, the complaint said.
A sale agreement paid Toll over 10 years and the last payment was recently made, the complaint said.
Toll asked friends to get him a gun as he wanted to kill the victim and told his wife it would help them financially, the complaint said.
