Boston Deadly Boat Crash Driver Indicted On Manslaughter Charge

BOSTON — A Boston man has been indicted on a manslaughter charge in connection with a boat crash that left a woman dead in Boston Harbor this past summer. An indictment was returned by a grand jury for Ryan Denver, 38, of Boston, charging him with involuntary manslaughter, and multiple counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Suffolk District Attorney Rachael Rollins said Thursday. Denver was driving a speedboat named "Make it Go Away," in Boston Harbor overnight and into the early hours of July 17, 2021, before police say he crashed into a navigational buoy, throwing him and seven passengers on the boat into the water. Around 3 a.m. on July 17, Boston police and the U.S. Coast Guard received word of the boat crash near Castle Island. Crews spent hours searching the water for a woman who had yet to surface. 27-year-old Jeanica Julce's body was found in Boston Harbor just after 10 a.m., where she was pronounced dead at the scene. The seven remaining passengers were all transported to Boston hospitals. Julce was living in Somerville and majoring in finance at UMass Boston, with dreams of opening her own dance studio, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family. "Jeanica was a vibrant young woman with a beautiful life ahead of her," Rollins said. "She deserved better than to lose everything because of another individual's recklessness." Days after the crash, WCVB reported a statement from Denver in which he said, "I am incredibly saddened by the loss of my dear friend this weekend. My deepest sympathies are extended to Jeanica's family. I am thankful to those first responders who came to our aid and will cooperate with their follow-up to our rescue."
