Trash Pickup Rules Changed In Bowie To Keep Wildlife Away

BOWIE, MD — The city of Bowie announced it is now requiring residents to place certain waste in trash cans with secure lids in an effort to stop wildlife from tearing the bags open. In a news release, the city said there has been "an increasing volume" of complaints from residents who have had vultures and other wildlife disturbing their property. "Trash bags with food scraps, human or pet waste, or carryout food containers attract these birds of prey, raccoons, cats, and other animals," the city said. "These animals, especially the ones with sharp beaks and/or claws, tear open the bags and toss the trash all over the street and on nearby lawns." Now, residents must place waste that attracts these animals in a bag, and put the bag into a trash can with a tight-fitting lid. The change goes into effect Nov. 1, the city said in a news release. The city will "gradually begin enforcement of the new law," beginning with a public awareness campaign, and will issue warnings to residents who do not properly bag their trash before potentially issuing fines, a city representative told Patch. The law was passed by City Council in September.
