Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Friday October 29th, 2021! First, today's weather: Times of clouds and sun. High: 72 Low: 57. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: You'd think they'd teach you in "Thievery 101" not to leave your identification card at the scene of the crime. I guess Timothy Eccel, of Sacramento County, missed that day in class. At around 7:32 a.m. on October 21, a homeowner in Sacramento called 911 to report that the catalytic converter on his vehicle had been stolen. He mentioned that he found a reciprocal saw blade on the ground under his vehicle... oh, and a California ID card, too. It didn't take much detective work to figure out who police were looking for. When investigators searched Eccel's identity, they discovered he was on parole until 2023 for a first-degree burglary conviction after he'd served six months behind bars. He's in custody, now, on charges of felony grand theft, felony vandalism, possession of burglary tools, and a parole hold. (CBS Sacramento)From 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, through 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, one lane in both the north and southbound directions of Interstate 5 near downtown will close for construction work. The northbound lane closures are from P Street to the American River Bridge. If you're traveling south, the closures run from the American River Bridge to R Street. As part of the Fix50 Highway Enhancement Project overseen by Caltrans, bridges are being lifted to allow oversized trucks more access, make room for more HOV lanes and replace outdated roadways. (ABC10) The Office of Traffic Safety has awarded the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office a $266,738 grant for "DUI/DUID Misdemeanor Prosecution, Education and Outreach." This program focuses on reducing the number of persons killed or injured in DUI (driving under the influence) / DUID (driving under the influence of drugs) incidents, through successful prosecution of DUI/DUID cases as well as law enforcement trainings and community outreach. OTS ranked Sacramento County fifth out of 58 counties in victims killed and injured in crashes involving alcohol in 2018. "Experience and knowledge are critical for prosecutors to build successful impaired driving cases," OTS Director Barbara Rooney said. "This program provides resources, tools and a strong training network for DUI prosecution teams that hold people who drive under the influence accountable for their actions." (Sacda.org) There was surveillance video of the alleged attempted kidnapping in the Arden Arcade area Monday. The video shows a good Samaritan jumping in to shield the young child from the would-be kidnapper. After the attacker chased the caretakers away from the stroller, Asharf Ali ran up to the stroller and blocked it from the offending woman who was yelling "my baby, my baby." Ali was able to chase the woman off and another witness called 911. The baby is safe and the perpetrator is behind bars. (KCRA3) The Grinch may actually have a leg up on stealing Christmas this year with help from the supply chain. Christmas trees may be in short supply. If you want a fresh tree, much of the supply has been impacted by weather, droughts and fires in California and the Pacific Northwest. The recommendation is to shop early. If you want to switch to an artificial tree to skip the skyrocketing prices and "burnt fringes" of the fresh ones, again, shop early and be patient. The supply chain is impacting deliveries of trees and other seasonal items. Don't worry about your gobbler for Thanksgiving, though. While you may not get the California fresh bird you were hoping for, there will likely still be enough frozen to go around.
