Description
Each year, DCR hosts guided hikes on New Year’s Day, offering a chance to enjoy healthy outdoor activities at our Massachusetts state parks! Join friends, neighbors and DCR State Park staff for a guided First Day Hike at Mount Greylock State Reservation! This program is free, open to the public and recommended for ages 7 and older. Hike an easy to moderate 2 miles (90 minutes) on the Bradley Farm Trail. Explore remnants of an old orchard and former farmlands now reclaimed by forest succession. Afterwards enjoy hot chocolate by the fireplace! Be prepared for cold weather: dress in layers and wear winter boots. If conditions permit, bring snowshoes and hiking poles. Dogs are welcome on a 10 foot maximum leash. There will be TWO OPPORTUNITIES for First Day Hikes this year. This is the first hike of the day and it starts promptly at 9:30 am. The second hike starts at 12:30 pm and has a separate event link at https://1230p-mt-greylock-first-day-hike.eventbrite.com . Both hikes meet at the Mount Greylock State Reservation Visitor Center, 30 Rockwell Road in Lanesborough, MA 01237. PLEASE NOTE: SPACE IS LIMITED to 25 people per hike. PRE-REGISTRATION IS RECOMMENDED BY DECEMBER 30. TO PRE-REGISTER for the 9:30am hike: Click on the green REGISTER button in the top right hand corner of this event page. At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts. Rising above the surrounding Berkshire landscape, dramatic views of 60-90 miles distant may be seen. It became Massachusetts' first wilderness state park, acquired by the Commonwealth in 1898, to preserve its natural environment for public enjoyment. Wild and rugged yet intimate and accessible, Mount Greylock rewards the visitor exploring this special place of scenic and natural beauty.
