Description

The Symposia provide a time specifically dedicated to special topics related to classical education at Great Hearts Irving Upper School. For our first Symposium of the year, we will hear from Drs. John and Amber Dyer about the latest in tech, education, and adolescent brain research as they think about the question, "Why do Silicon Valley execs and coders send their children to low-tech liberal arts schools like Great Hearts?" This event will be held in Room 101 at the Upper School Campus. Space is limited so an RSVP is required. The event will also be live streamed on the Great Hearts Irving Facebook page to accommodate a larger audience. Dr. John Dyer has written, edited, and contributed to several books (his most recent will be published by Oxford University Press in 2022). Dr. Dyer has been a technology creator for more than twenty years, building tools used by Facebook, Google, Apple, Anheuser-Busch, the Department of Defense, and the Digital Bible Society. His open-source code is now used on more than forty percent of websites. Like many Silicon Valley executives and tech creators, he sends his kids to a low-screen school... In this case, his wife (Dr. Amber Dyer) happens to be the headmaster. You can read more about her past work as a Fellow of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture here. The Drs. Dyer are proud Great Hearts Irving parents!
