Press release from Stevens Memorial Library: October 26th, 2021 Wednesday, Oct. 27 @ 7PM Virtual Author Visit with Noé Álvarez "Spirit Run: A 6000-Mile Marathon Through North America's Stolen Land" Noé Álvarez, the son of working-class Mexican immigrants, fled a life of labor in fruit-packing plants to run a four-month-long Indigenous marathon from Canada to Guatemala that pushed him to his limits. He'll discuss his harrowing journey — overcoming hunger, thirst, and fear, as well as the dangers he encountered, including stone-throwing motorists and a mountain lion. Álvarez will also share his reimagining of North America and his place in it, exploring Indigenous and working-class humanity in a capitalist society where oil extraction, deforestation, and substance abuse wreck communities. Register here Thursday, Oct. 28 @ 7PM Virtual Author Visit with John Forti "The Heirloom Gardener : traditional plants & skills for the modern world" These days, we all need some good news and a way to participate in meaningful change. The Heirloom Gardener is a book for gardeners who want to deepen their knowledge and improve life for families, pollinators and wildlife in their own backyards.  It's a love poem to the earth; a map to the art of living intentionally and a guidepost for environmental gardeners and artisans.  It unearths old-ways, storied plants and artisanal life-skills; like seed-saving, herbalism, foraging, distillation, ethnobotany and organics which contribute to a new 21st century arts and crafts movement. With woodcuts from Caldecott Medal artist Mary Azarian, The Heirloom Garden offers a dose of wild hope for a weary nation. Register here This press release was produced by Stevens Memorial Library.
