MARLBOROUGH, MA — Marlborough's second recreational cannabis dispensary is opening to the public Thursday along the Boston Post Road near the Sudbury line. The 2,650 square-foot Marlborough store opening Thursday will be the third in Massachusetts for Local Roots, which operates dispensaries in Fitchburg and Sturbridge. The company grows its cannabis at facilities in Framingham and Barre. Local Roots first proposed the new store in June 2020 with backing from Marlborough-based Keystone Development Corporation co-founders Michael Staiti and Rick Olstein. The chain was founded in 2016 by Dean Iandoli and Catherine Trifilo. The state Cannabis Control Commission granted Local Roots its final license in September. Following Thursday's soft opening, the store will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 5 with the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce. The next day, a grand opening ceremony will feature a food truck, drinks and cannabis vendors. Marlborough's first cannabis retailer, Garden Remedies, opened in summer 2019 at 416 Boston Post Road. Several months later, the owners of Vedi Naturals proposed an adult-use store at 505 Boston Post Road. Vedi co-owner Jigar Patel said in September he's anticipating a February 2022 opening date.
