BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA — Giant Food is partnering with Flashfood, an online discount food marketplace, on a pilot project at its store in the Bailey's Crossroads area, with the goal of cutting food waste and reducing customers' grocery bills. The Flashfood app allows customers to browse deals on fresh items like meat, produce boxes, dairy and bakery items that are nearing their best-by dates. Purchases are made directly through the app and customers then simply pick their order up from the Flashfood zone located inside the Giant store. Two Giant stores in Catonsville and Ellicott City in Maryland also are participating in the pilot project with Flashfood. Flashfood is already working with other regional store brands owned by Giant parent company Ahold Delhaize USA. "We're excited to roll out this pilot program with Flashfood to offer our customers valuable savings on fresh foods, while also decreasing food waste and working toward our goal of achieving Zero Waste Diversion by 2025," said Steven Jennings, Stakeholder Relations and Brand Lead for Health and Sustainability supporting Giant Food. The address of the Giant in Bailey's Crossroads is 3480 S. Jefferson St., Falls Church. "Food waste is a massive contributor to climate change and about $37 billion worth of food is thrown out each year in the U.S. at the retail level," Josh Domingues, founder and CEO of Flashfood, said in a statement Wednesday. "Sustainability-focused retail leaders like Ahold Delhaize USA and Giant Food are helping us work toward tackling this complex issue and in turn, bring more affordable fresh food options to shoppers," Domingues said. All participating Flashfood store locations, including the Giant store in Bailey's Crossroads, can be found via the store locator.
