Here are the top stories in Salt Lake City today: Salt Lake Federation of Teachers purchased and filled 546 backpacks with school supplies for Afghan students that will soon be filling classrooms across the state in hopes that it will bring "a sense of belonging." Backpacks were filled for both elementary and secondary school students, with a variety of items for each. Every refugee student in Salt Lake City School District will be provided with a backpack, and 150 students at the Utah International Charter School will receive one as well. (KSL.com)An unprecedented shortage of existing single-family homes, made worse by the coronavirus pandemic, has continued to depress sales and boost prices across the region centered on Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and Tooele through late summer and early fall. Now at $500,000, Salt Lake County's median home price held at around $550,000, a record high reached earlier this year. Salt Lake County's priciest ZIP codes are now 84108, spanning the mouth of Emigration Canyon; 84103, spread across Capitol Hill, the Avenues and Federal Heights; and in suburban Draper's 84020, where third-quarter medians ranged between $825,000 and $830,000. (Salt Lake Tribune) A former University of Utah autism researcher, Judith Zimmerman, was awarded $760,000 in damages by a jury last week after she claimed that the university retaliated against her for reporting an unethical release of health and educational records. (KSL.com) Even though Salt Lake County doesn't have a vaccine mandate, the Republican-led County Council approved exemptions Tuesday for religious and medical reasons if a mandate were to be put in place. (Salt Lake Tribune) Ameritech faculty and students delivered 765 costumes, 200 pounds of candy, 350 prizes, and 275 Halloween buckets to Primary Children's Hospital for children who would otherwise miss the holiday.
