Black Hawk College: Livestock Judging Team Takes 2nd At American Royal

Press release from Black Hawk College: October 26th, 2021 Congratulations to the Black Hawk College Livestock Judging Team for winning second place in the American Royal Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Kansas City, MO! The sophomore team outscored more than 20 teams from Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Wyoming. In livestock judging, selected contestants compete, as a team and individually, to judge groups of appropriate classes. Each contestant then meets one-on-one with a judge who listens to the reasons for that contestant's placement. Scores are based on presentation as well as accuracy of placement. Contestants gain skills in decision-making, critical thinking, oral communication, and self-confidence in addition to advancing their knowledge of the field. Out of 123 individual competitors, Dillon Sheiss of Larwill, IN, came in 7th overall; Robby Burchett of Jonesville, VA, came in 9th overall; and Kelly Spicer of Woodbine, MD, came in 10th overall. Sheiss also took 1st in Reasons, 8th in Sheep & Goats and 8th in Swine, while Burchett also took 3rd in Beef and Spicer took 7th in Reasons.
