Here are the top stories today in San Diego: COVID-19 vaccination boosters are now recommended and available for all who qualify in San Diego County, officials said Tuesday. The county's announcement follows the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's approval last week of booster shots for all three COVID-19 vaccines currently available. (City News Service)The California Labor Commissioner's Office announced that it has cited a Southern California grocery chain for failing to pay or delaying supplemental paid sick leave to 240 workers affected by COVID-19 at 38 stores, including three in San Diego County. The latest violations led to citations at three county locations in San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside. (City News Service)The American College of Emergency Physicians has awarded all four of Scripps Health's hospital emergency departments geriatric emergency department accreditation, Scripps announced. The designation recognizes delivery of a high-level of specialized care to older patients. (City News Service) San Diego County reported six new shigellosis cases associated with an ongoing outbreak, bringing the total to 23 confirmed and four probable cases among individuals experiencing homelessness, it was announced. The continuing investigation shows onset of the bacterial illness dates between Aug. 16 and Oct. 15, with the three new cases occurring between Sept. 10 and Oct. 17. The 27 cases in the outbreak represent 9 percent of the 290 total cases reported to date in San Diego County. (City News Service)Environmental health officials urged swimmers and surfers to stay out of the coastal beaches and bays following recent rain in the county. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality issued a general rain advisory warning of increased bacteria levels from urban runoff in the ocean and bay waters — especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets.
