WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Two men stole money from an ATM early Wednesday morning in Western Springs, connecting a chain from a pickup truck to the machine, police said. About 5:30 a.m., Western Springs police responded to an alarm at Heartland Bank, 4456 Wolf Road. They found the chain linked to the heavily damaged ATM in the designated drive-thru area, police said. Through surveillance video, police confirmed two face mask-wearing men got out of a Dodge pickup truck and used chains and other prying tools to open the ATM, according to a police news release. They removed vaults, which contained an undetermined amount of money, police said. The Dodge was determined to be stolen in Villa Park, police said. Both men ran away from the bank before police arrived, the release said. One of the men was wearing a black hoodie, gray pants and white shoes, while the other was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants and black shoes, police said. No other identifying information was provided. No bank customers or employees were present at the time of the theft. Police said they would maintain a heightened presence with more patrols in the area. The FBI is helping with the investigation, police said.
