Here are the top stories today in and around Poway: A former Qualcomm director who pleaded guilty to evading thousands of dollars in taxes through the wide-ranging donation fraud scheme involving former Chabad of Poway Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein was sentenced to four years of probation and six months of home confinement. Jason Ellis, 42, of Poway, admitted to evading more than $27,000 in taxes by donating money to nonprofit entities associated with the Chabad, funds which Goldstein returned to Ellis. (City News Service)Poway High School's Engineering Academy and Pathway has received national recognition as a 2020-21 Project Lead the Way Distinguished School in the high school division. This is the third consecutive year for Poway High to earn the honor. The number of flu cases in the county remains relatively low, but the county Health and Human Services Agency believes this season will be more severe than last year, when many people were wearing masks, social distancing and staying home more often.
