PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Police shot and killed a man who struck an officer with a hammer Tuesday afternoon in the Overbrook section of the city, authorities said.
According to police, the incident unfolded at about 3:04 p.m. Tuesday on the 5700 block of Overbrook Avenue.
Police were called to the area for a report of a disturbance and found a man, later identified as Koffi Dzima, armed with a pickaxe and a hammer in a home on the block.
Two officers told Dzima to drop the pickaxe and hammer, then used tasers on him when he refused, police said.
Dzima fell to the floor but then attacked one of the officers with a hammer, striking him in the head, causing him to fall to the floor, police said.
Police said Dzima then stood over the officer with the hammer in hand, which led both officer to fatally shoot him.
Dzima was taken to Lankenau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 p.m.
The officer who was struck was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital to be treated for a gunshot to the right knee and a wound to the head, police said.
The other officer was not hurt, police said.
According to police, the incident was recorded on the officers' body worn cameras.
