Press release from Birmingham Public Library: October 22, 2021 Birmingham's mural collection is growing—and the Birmingham Public Library's (BPL) Smithfield Branch Library is getting one! The City of Birmingham will receive a grant up to $25,000 from the Bloomberg Philanthropies as a part of their Asphalt Art Initiative. Bloomberg Philanthropies invests in cities and countries across the world to improve the quality of life by funding the arts, education, the environment, government innovation, and public health to create lasting change. Their latest project is the Asphalt Art Initiative. The Bloomberg Philanthropies selected 26 U.S.A. cities—Birmingham being one of them—for their second installment of the Asphalt Art Initiative, adding onto the 16 U.S. cities they funded in the project's inaugural year in 2020.
