Description

Save the date for our Annual Fall Benefit and Awards ceremony! (Please note: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for entry) Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) fights for housing justice by defending Chicago renters against unjust evictions and substandard living conditions. Our annual “Bringing Justice Home” event celebrates those individuals and institutions who make our work possible. This year’s award recipients include Frank Avellone, Rachel Blake, and Jenner and Block LLP. As LCBH’s Senior Attorney, Frank helped to write the Keep Chicago Renting Ordinance (KCRO). Passed in 2013, the KCRO protects renters living in foreclosed properties by requiring new owners to offer a new lease or pay $10,600 in relocation assistance to help renters resettle elsewhere. As a legal intern, Rachel helped to launch LCBH's foreclosure database. Rachel generated and mapped data that was used by community partners to alert renters that the buildings where they lived were being foreclosed. Today, Rachel is the Associate Director for Regional Housing Legal Services in Glenside, Pennyslvania. Jenner and Block volunteer attorneys co-counseled several KCRO cases. They helped renters who, through no fault of their own, were facing eviction due to their landlord’s inability to pay their mortgage. Several times, Jenner and Block attorneys have worked with LCBH to respond to legal challenges that threatened the KCRO. LCBH is proud to announce the following awards to be presented on November 18th. Barbara Grau Outstanding Housing Advocate Award – Frank Avellone Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award – Jenner and Block Sharon L.
