The Jacobite movement, though relatively short-lived, had a major impact on British sociopolitical development. Beginning in 1814 with Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley, the Jacobites have been foregrounded in order to explore issues of imperialism, national identity, and gender roles. Outlander, at different points and to varying degrees, investigates each of these themes. So who were the Jacobites and what was their deal? Has history (mis)remembered them? How has Outlander both capitalized on and created a frenzy surrounding Jacobitism? What does their near constant fictionalization tell us about Jacobite historiography? And perhaps most importantly, where the heck are the women? Let us turn to Outlander… Originally from Oklahoma City, Morgan Mosby has been a Georgetown resident for the last 5 years. Morgan and her family would often vacation in the area, visiting her aunt and uncle’s farm, an annual event which allowed them the opportunity to pretend they were country folk if only for a week. However, Georgetown became her home when she enrolled at Southwestern University in the fall of 2016. Fast forward four years and dozens (read: hundreds) of papers later, Morgan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History in May 2020. While at Southwestern, she was invited to complete an Honors Thesis for the History department, a project which culminated in an analysis of four works of historical fiction about the Jacobites, the last of which was Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander. Morgan now works for a local mortgage company and generally appreciates being an Austin-area resident in her early 20s not hampered by research deadlines. She enjoys watching college football (go Pokes!) and has recently rediscovered her talent for trumpet-playing, much to her roommate’s chagrin.
