ROCKVILLE, MD — A fifth grader died at Farmland Elementary after a medical incident on Monday morning, multiple news outlets are reporting. The student collapsed in class and the school nurse was called, according to The Washington Post. The nurse called 911, other students were taken out of the classroom and the school went into shelter in place while medical professionals attempted to save the boy. The child was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead, WJLA reported. WJLA published a message Principal April D. Longest sent to parents after the child's death, which had not been disclosed to students yet. "While we have not shared this loss with any of our students, our school psychologist and counselors along with the district-level staff were onsite and available to support our students who were present when the medical emergency occurred," she wrote in the message. "We will continue to have qualified staff onsite to support students and staff as we deal with this loss in the days ahead." The child's identity has not been released. Longest said she would share funeral arrangements with Farmland Elementary School parents when the child's family notifies her.
