PITTSBURGH, PA — A California man charged with supplying the drugs that killed hip-hop star and Pittsburgh native Mac Miller in 2018 has reached a plea bargain with prosecutors that still could result in a lengthy prison sentence. According to court docs obtained by TMZ, Stephen Walter pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of fentanyl. A charge of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance was dropped. Prosecutors are recommending a 17-year prison term and five years of supervised release for Walter, according to TMZ. The maximum sentence he could face is 20 years, a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of as much as $1 million. Prosecutors alleged Walter had another person take the drugs that caused Miller's fatal overdose to Cameron James Petit, who delivered them to Miller. Petit is charged with distribution of a controlled substance in connection with Miller's death. The Los Angeles County Examiner-Coroner determined that Miller died of mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol. Pettit allegedly agreed to supply Miller with 30 milligram oxycodone pills, as well as cocaine and the sedative Xanax. But instead of providing Miller with genuine oxycodone, Pettit is accused of selling him counterfeit oxycodone containing fentanyl – a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin. Born Malcolm James McCormick, Miller grew up in Point Breeze and graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. He died barely a month after the release of his last album, "Swimming," and had been scheduled to return to his hometown to perform at the Petersen Events Center in Oakland.
